How Educational Leaders Might Use Blogs

There are many ways in which an educational leader could use a blog.  One that comes to mind is to provide a spot where the principal of a campus could post items or topics of interest for parents to read.  Perhaps using monthly topics such as healthy eating, bullying or study habits.  Another way is to maintain non-competitive communication with others in their same capacity at other campuses or other districts.  A way to discuss issues that come up daily which could use support or advice from other professionals.  One way I intend to use a blog is to create a spot where I discuss books or articles relating to topics relevant to my staff and where they can comment and discuss.

What I've Learned About Action Research

In my readings, I've discovered action research is probably the best tool for educators to utilize in developing not only their skills as a teacher or administrator, but to also enhance the learning experience for students, therefore guaranteeing success.

Action research or inquiry allows those of us who are on the "front lines" to be the problem-solvers.  I can identify an issue which impacts my students, for example, unsuccessful performance on AP tests, and begin researching the why and then determine the how.  After spending time analyzing, researching and collaborating with other educators who have a shared interest in this issue through a professional learning community, we can then implement solutions in our classrooms.

Most importantly, since we actively participate in the implementation, we can be the ones to make adjustments as we work towards success. We track how students progress and come together frequently to discuss how it is going. It makes it an ongoing process, which is why the reflective part of it discussed so much in the text is integral to its success.

I also realized action research has been a large part of my district's organization.  We have a district-level Leadership Team, and campus-based components of a similar nature.  We also have an Administrator's Academy bringing together current or aspiring Administrators together once a month to actively work on projects and address issues in our district.

Finally, I believe action research is a great tool because of its ability to put the power of change into the hands of those who actively reach students every day.  Their experience and ability to work together to provide and implement solutions is critiical to success.  It also encourages educators to be lifelong learners.
